THE GROUP:

The group was basically composed of eleven members, nine of which were girls. Granting that we lack male members, it was at first very hard for us to decide on our presentation. The play must have a story dominated by female characters so we thought of something that would meet what the group could offer. It wasn't that easy, but eventually, we were able to designate each member of their respective roles.

Here's a summary of the roles assigned to each member:

  • Kasandra Te - Leader / Boss / Friend
  • Nick Jusayan - Synthesizer / Father
  • Jelou Tura - Mother
  • Regine Faustino - Eldest Daughter
  • Harly Jacinto - Secretary / Youngest daughter / Rally Girl
  • Cherrie Pie - Daughter / Rally Girl
  • Aiyah Damasco - Prostitute / "Bugaw"
  • Eloise Hibaya - Documenter
  • Perry Lamanilao - Technical / Old man
  • Xian Wu - Rally Girl
  • Homelyn Sonsona - Narrator

Well, before anything else, let me tell something about the..

CONCEPT:

At first we wanted to do MMK style to accompany our story but it would make our presentation unoriginal so we decided to stick with our own ideas. The story we made was basically a common happening in some families now a days. Although we kind of exaggerated it a little bit to add some humor, everyone could still relate on it. We wanted a simple role play yet entertaining and original plus an addition of creativity when it comes to our props and background.

Of course, everything has got to be a result of something. In our case, our presentation was an output of a process we call..

THE MAKING:

The presentation can't be done in just one meeting, so we made sure to maximize every vacant time we have to prepare and finalize things. To give you an idea of what transpired during those meetings, here is a summary:

Good as none..
August 24 (Wednesday) - Since the presentation was getting closer and closer each day, we decided to meet up after our Economics class to get things done and organize our group. The meeting was not that productive because some weren't serious enough to give out ideas. Realizing that the meeting isn't going to lead us anywhere, we called it a day and organized another meeting instead.

Game time!
August 26 (Friday) - We decided to meet up during activity period. The place we chose was in Harlys along Juan Luna street. Although not all of the members were able to gather due to personal reasons, the meeting was somehow productive. We discussed our suggestions as to what topic we should choose. Some suggested Micro and Macro Economics but majority wanted to do Recession. In the end, we chose recession. We then started to have a story line and assigned some members of their respective roles.

Holiday is not an issue..
August 30 (Tuesday) - It was a holiday but the group met again. This time, the meeting place was in school. We continued where we left off from the previous meeting. We polished the story by giving out ideas and suggestions as to what the flow of the story should be. At the end of the day, we have already straightened out things.

Back to business..
August 31 (Wednesday) - Since we had a forum in our Economics, we decided to meet up after. This time, the script was already done. All we have to do is distribute it to each member and have a run through of the lines without the acting. Each cast read their respective lines according to the flow of the story. We ended the meeting with an agreement to meet up again tomorrow.

Meeting adjourned!
September 1 (Thursday) - The group's meeting time was 4pm. Some of the members were already at the meeting place, but majority were still in their respective classes. Since its slowly getting dark, the leader decided to cancel the meeting and do it tomorrow instead.

Where were we?
September 2 (Friday) - Because the meeting yesterday didn't push through, the group met during activity period. The group discussed the props and practiced the scenes, this time with the acting. We also came up with an idea to add a dance number at the end of the play to add some spice on it. It was indeed a productive meeting but still, it wasn't not enough to get us ready for the big day.

Tension strikes, determination retalliates!
September 4 (Sunday) - Although it was a Sunday, we made sure that everybody would be around for the final practice. We met early, around 8am. Knowing that the big day would be tomorrow, the tension began to sink in. Everybody was serious now and willing to give their best during the practice. First, we decided to split up the group, some were assigned to buy the basic props needed for our presentation. Another group went to Boulevard to have carpenters build a frame for the projector effect. During the afternoon session, we had a general rehearsal. We practiced the scenes, lines, emotions, flow, and the blocking. We did this over and over again until such time we were satisfied with our performance. It was around 5pm when we finalized everything. We wished each and everyone good luck and reminded them to continue practicing at home. We then split up and got ourselves ready for the big day ahead of us.

Finally, after all those tiring days and sleepless nights we've spent..

THE OUTPUT:

THE FLOW:

Scene 1: Thanks boss!

The scene showed the father talking to his boss. The boss gave him a project which is to be done in 3 months in order for him to get promoted.

Scene 2: Ooooh yeaah!

In this scene, the father went home wearing a happy face. His wife then asked him what's the big deal. They ended up in bed because of the good mood brought about by the project entrusted to the father and also because of the flirtation of the wife.

Scene 3: This ain't good..

The scene showed us the father and mother going to the living room to watch TV after having a good time in bed. They watched the news on TV which was all about the economic status going down. After the news, they talked a bit and gave out their respective opinions regarding the news. They again ended up in bed.

Scene 4: Worry not, I'm on it!

The scene showed us the father going back to his boss' office. He was reminded of the deadline of the project entrusted to him by his boss.

Scene 5: What?!

It was already 2 months since the project was given to the father. He was called by his boss so he went to the office. On his way, he saw a group of employees having a rally outside the establishment. As he went inside, his boss wore a disappointed face. The boss then told the father about the bad news which is he is one of the employees that were fired from their jobs because of the recession happening in the economy.

Scene 6: Adding insult to injury..

The father went home and was approached by his wife. He told her about the news. The wife also told him that she is pregnant and that she is about to take a maternity leave from her job. The father didn't know what exactly to feel at that moment. He was saddened by the loss of his job at the same time happy because a new life is about to be born. They talked about how they would survive with 4 children knowing that both of them don't have a job.

Scene 7: Sisters..

The scene showed us that one of the daughters heard what the father and mother talked about from the last scene. She then told her other sisters about the family problem. However, two of the daughters didn't really care that much.

Scene 8: Job offering..

The daughter was very problematic. She didn't know what to do to help her family. She didn't want to stop schooling. As she was talking to her friend about her problem, a prostitute/bugaw came up to her and offered her a job. At first she was reluctant in accepting the job, but still managed to keep the calling card given to her by the prostitute/bugaw.

Scene 9: Desperation move!

Tuition fees are about to be paid, so the daughter was now very desperate. She remembered the calling card given to her by the prostitute/bugaw. She then called her and asked what the job is all about. The prostitute/bugaw ordered her to go to Central Bank so that she could give her the job.

Scene 10: I don't want to do this..but..

The daughter went to the place. Without further explanations, the prostitute/bugaw made the daughter get inside a car to give pleasure to an old man. Because of desperation, the daughter had no choice but to oblige.

Scene 11: Secrets are made to be found out by time..

The daughter went on with her new job. One night, as she was doing her job as a part-time prostitute, her mother saw her with a customer. Her mother was so disappointed and angry about her daughter so she came up with a plan to wait for her at home and talk to her.

Scene 12: Confrontation!

It was around 2am in the morning when the daughter went home. Her mother confronted her about what she saw. They had a very emotional conversation. The daughter was very sorry for what she did and asked for forgiveness. Unfortunately, because of the tension, the mother's womb ached. The daughter then called her father to bring her mother to the hospital.

Scene 13: Family..

The three daughters were talking outside the hospital room of their mother. The eldest daughter, who was the part-time prostitute, reflected to her sisters what she has done. She was very sorry for all the things she did that put the life of her mother to danger. After a while, the father went out of the room. The eldest daughter approached him and asked for her mother's condition and said that she was sorry. The father then called for the other two daughters and gave them an advice. The father explained that recession or the fall of the economy should not be a reason to destroy their lives. It should not be a hindrance for anyone to live their lives with dignity. He also told them that it's his responsibility to take care of them and provide for them.

Scene 14: Curtains down!

It was concluded by the narrator that the family went back to their lives. It was also revealed that after some time, they were able to overcome recession and was able to live a happy life. A dance number was also featured after the conclusion to introduce the cast one by one.

CONCLUSION:

Recession. A period of general economic decline; typically defined as a decline in GDP for two or more consecutive quarters. A recession is typically accompanied by a drop in the stick market, an increase in unemployment, and a decline in the housing market.

Recession in unavoidable. There will be a time that our economy would face such problem. It's not a matter of "how and why" rather it's a matter of "when". All we could do is learn to face it. Resorting to things that are not good and acceptable would not make you any better.

Opportunities are everywhere. Recession might be drawing to a close, but its continuing legacy is employers' reliance on short-term staff. There may be fewer jobs for life, but there are more jobs in a lifetime.
